The Manchester Museum and Imperial War Museum North have a long and well established tradition of working with volunteers. The Imperial War Museum North has developed a bespoke training course, accredited using ASDAN’s Volunteering Short Course. When it opened in July 2002, the Imperial War Museum North (IWM North) in Manchester, England, unveiled an ambitious community volunteering project: the museum had recruited over 100 local residents, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, to work towards vocational qualifications in the museum prior to its opening, building confidence, gaining experience, and increasing employability. One of five branches of the Imperial War Museum, it explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society.It is the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to be located in the north of England.
